The burner consists of copper heat exchanger. Heat exchanger’s job is to pass on heat and transform a medium from hot to cold or cold to hot. Generally copper heat exchangers are used for their high thermal conductivity and ease of fabrication and low cost nature.

A negative feedback loop also exists that helps to bring water to target temperature. A digital dial is set at the heater cover where user can set the desired temperature.

As water pass through it gets hot. When water heats up it produces pressure upward, when it happens hot water eventually ends up going back to cold water inlet.

A pressure relief valve that is generally installed in a water heater let this pressure go off. Otherwise the hot water pressure goes back to cold water inlet and enters in the municipal tank where the pressure gets relieved. However presence of a pressure relief valve make the job smoother and hot water does not go in to cold water inlet.

A pressure regulator can also function in similar way, it controls the flow and do not let the hot water enter back to cold water tank, this is called closed system. When a closed system exists the tank has to be near it too. If not sometime the pressure valve can leak, but that is another story we will discuss later.

Non-condensing:

Non condensing tankless water heater is the first generation of tank less units that give hot water on demand. They have Efficiency Factor 82%-85%. However the efficiency drops when used for short drops like-hand wash. They are well known in Japan and n Europe for their reliability, but the poor venting system of this type requires users to install additional stainless steel vents, costing some extra money.

Condensing:

Condensing tankless water heaters are the second generation of tank less water heaters. They have two heat exchanger one is same as that of non-condensing and termed as primary heat exchanger. Other one termed as second reuses heat the exhaust to further heat the water.It has higher efficiency of 92-94%. Also venting is inexpensive through PVC but it goes out weight by high unit cost. Like non condensing water heaters it cannot go beyond the lower efficiency for short water draws.

Condensing hybrid:

The third generations of tankless water heaters are called Condensing hybrid tankless water. They are most fond in USA. Though named as tank less it incorporates small – between 1 liter and 2-gallon tank. This reserve is kept to resolve the inefficiency of high water consumption for short draws. Generally people install new gas tankless water heater in same place where old water heater was. It is convenient as there water line and probably gas line (if previous one was gas fired) already exist. Your existing gas line may need to install a tee and valve. To attach your old line of gas with new heater you can use a flexible gas supply line. You need to run a new gas line from the tee to the point where the line can easily catch the new water heater.

Use copper pipe to attach new hot and cold water lines to the existing water lines. This new line will go into water heater. In order to pipe securely in the wall, use hangers. They will hold the pipe against wall. Also this will make it easy for insulation of pipe later. It is recommended to clean the pipes and connectors before soldering. This help to remove oxidation. In order to soldering you need to apply flux to the end of the pipe. Then you need to slip pipe and connectors together. Start soldering by heating the copper with a torch.

Some water heaters are ready to be hung some are better to mount in a platform.If you want to mount the tank less heater in platform, than you can build a platform with 2 x 4-inch pieces of lumber. Through this you can mount the new tank less water heater 4 inches from the wall.

Follow the manufacturer instructions and connect the shutoff valve and sediment trap to the water heater. Now attach the gas supply line with the shutoff valve and connect the water supply line with water heater. It is very important to check for leak this can be done by bleeding the gas line. then turn it off until installation is finished.

How to Install on demand water heater electric ?

Find the amp required-
To figure out amp read volt and watt in the label of the unit. Divide watt by volt and you can get the amp.

Stress test-
In case of electric water heater a lot of emphasis is given on the capacity of the breaker. So do the stress test of the main breaker. Generally all amps have highest power up to the 80% capacity that they stand for.ie-if your tank less unit needs a 50-60 amp breaker you will need 60*1.20=72 amp breaker or more whatever is available nearer to that value in market. So do the math and check if your existing breaker is powerful enough or you need a new one.

Check if the unit is heated and the manual

• If the unit is heated you cannot install the unit
• Check for manual instruction
• Check in the electrical rating plate that shows voltage and wattage or you can look at product spec sheet. You should Consult Tankless manual if it is available
• If manual asks for using a licensed plumber electrician and says your warranty will be void if you do it other way than you should consult a professional and get things done by them.

Check inside for wire connections

Check the manual and the unit to decide how many circuit breakers it may need .A tank less unit can need 1-6 circuit breaker and wires are to be connected in those terminals separately. So look for it and do according to the manual.

Install some additional if required

On demand electric water heater cannot heat up water as fast as gas heaters. Electric gas heaters use much electricity to produce hot water. So in order to reduce energy consumption you can add a tempering tank to preheat incoming cold water. This will keep thermostat setting low, reduce consumption. Tankless Water Heater Maintenance

To get long lifespan, you must maintain your Tankless water heater on a regular basis. In every month you have to flush and clean your device at once. During flushing, you have to change filters and drain the system entirely. This extra hassle of maintenance sometimes is not bearable in our busy lives.

How to Clean a Tankless Water Heater?

The cleaning or flushing procedure of a tankless water heater is following:

1. At first you have to switch off the electric circuit of the heater. If it has a gas heater, then spin the gas cutoff anticlockwise to turn it off.
2. Then you have to access the wiring of the tankless water heater’s unit with a screwdriver for removing the cover plate. Then use a non-contact electrical tester against the heater wiring towards the terminals. You have to turn off the main circuit breaker until all wires materialize that no power is left to access the system. After that, the cover plate should be replaced.
3. Water supply valve and the main hot water valve should be turned off.
4. Now you need 2 garden hose for this step. One end of the 6 foot garden hose should be attached to the vent of the pond pump and the other end should be attached to the cold water isolation valve. The second garden hose will be attached to the hot water isolation valve. The couplers of the hose need to be tightened with an adaptable monkey wrench.
5. The open end of the second garden hose and the pump should be placed into a large sized bucket. Now five gallons of clean and fresh white vinegar needs to be poured into the bucket.
6. You have to propagate the vinegar into the heater. Turn on the pump placed in the bucket and then open both the cold and hot isolation valves.
7. Now you need to allow the pump to propagate for 45 minutes and after that the pump should be turned off. Then the vinegar should be exhausted from the heater through the hoses inside the bucket. Cold water isolation valve has to be closed.
8. After dumping the vinegar the open ended hose needs to be placed into the bucket. Turning on the valve of cold water supply, allow the water to flow for 5 minutes into bucket. Then disconnect the hoses from the valves after stopping the supply of cold water.
9. Turning off the hot water isolation valve, the inlet filter screen has to be removed. To clear any deposit inside, the screen needs to be cleansed. Install the screen again.
10. Following by the cold-water supply valve, the hot water valve has to be turned on. To bleed any air from the hot water lines you have to open a couple of hot water faucets. After making sure there is no air in the lines close the faucets.
11. Now you have to check thoroughly if there is any leak in the heater’s connection. Then you need to turn on the gas supply valve and check the circuit breaker of the heater. Finally, make sure if there is hot water at the faucets.
